2010 UPDATE - Here we go... The 2010 season of Cleveland Idol has begun. According to the email I received from FOX 8, fewer contestants were chosen this year so the odds of winning are greater. Along with that, they're giving tickets each night to one lucky contestant." From FOX 8: This year, we want all our “Cleveland Idol” contestants to feel like winners, so we will be randomly selecting one person from each night to win exclusive tickets from FOX 8. You could win tickets to Cedar Point, Kennywood, our Indians Suite, and more! Just by attending your audition you are entered for a chance to win!"

From FOX 8: With the number of semi-finalists we have auditioning for Cleveland Idol, we are finding many of you have questions. Below is a list of the most frequently asked questions and hopefully this helps clear up any confusion.

FAQs:

Registration for Cleveland Idol auditions ended on 2/21/2010 at 11:59 PM. We are no longer accepting registrants for the 2010 competition.

Your audition information will be verified at registration. Days and times of auditions are as follows:

Saturday, 2/27 – registration 5:30 p.m., auditions 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Sunday, 2/28 – registration 3:30 p.m., auditions 4:30-7:30 p.m.
Monday, 3/1 – registration 5:30 p.m., auditions 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Tuesday, 3/2 – registration 5:30 p.m., auditions 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Wednesday, 3/3 – registration 5:30 p.m., auditions 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Thursday, 3/4 – registration 5:30 p.m., auditions 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Friday, 3/5 – registration 5:30 p.m., auditions 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Saturday, 3/6 – registration 5:30 p.m., auditions 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Sunday, 3/7 – registration 3:30 p.m., auditions 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Showing up earlier than your registration time is NOT necessary. However, we do ask people to be on time for their assigned registration period. Each night we will be auditioning over 75 people, so it is important that everyone arrive in a timely manner for registration in order for us to keep the show moving. Keeping this in mind, you will audition based on order of arrival so the first to arrive and register will be the first to audition.

Once you have auditioned you do NOT need to stay until the end. Finalists will NOT be announced that night, but instead will be announced after all auditions on or about 3/9/2010. Out of all the semi-finalists who try out from 2/27 – 3/7, nine (9) finalists will be named.

IMPORTANT: You MUST be 15 years of age to audition. IF YOU ARE UNDER 18, YOU MUST BRING A PARENT OR GUARDIAN WITH YOU TO SIGN-OFF ON YOUR RELEASE FORMS.

If you registered to audition more than once and were assigned more than one audition date, please choose ONLY ONE DATE to attend. You will not be allowed to audition more than one time during the 2010 competition.

Your valid identification will be checked to receive your two (2) tickets into the Auto Show and when you register before the audition. You will pick up both tickets for the audition (one for you, and one for a guest). We do NOT need your guest’s name at will call.

Any song choice is fine, but it must be sung within a :60 second timeframe and must be accappella (without musical accompaniment). Please be prepared ahead of time. We will not have song lists for you to choose from at the show. You do not have to start at the top of the song.

Selling materials (i.e. CD’s of your original music) at the IX Center is strictly prohibited. Please do not bring these types of materials into the Auto Show.

You will be using a microphone and your audition will be filmed by a FOX 8 photographer.

This competition is neither related to “American Idol” nor will it affect your chances of auditioning for that show at a later date and time if you so choose.

There is no dress code, but you will be on an elevated stage and this is a family show, so keep that in mind.

2009 UPDATE - I did not attend this year but many have. I've received lots of emails asking about the finalists and new information for this year's Cleveland Idol. I know Fox8 has little to no coverage on it, so if you have a video, want to vote for best contestant, have an opinion or experience, feel free to share it here in the comment section. 2008 UPDATE - I attended and participated in Cleveland Idol on February 24th, 2008 and witnessed some really great auditions and talent from all over the Cleveland area. I had a nice laugh and chat with "The fan of Clay Aiken." I decided to post a blog topic about it due to the fact that there's nothing on the web covering Cleveland Idol 2008 and I know there were pictures/videos and contestants that would like some opinions or updates.

Stacey Frey, the Fox 8 morning news reporter was the Cleveland Idol emcee on the 24th and she was great. She kept the crowd going and had an upbeat personality during the three hour event. Thanks to Ford and Fox 8 for the fun, Cleveland Idol T-shirt and free tickets to the Auto show (Which is the second largest in the country.) Share your Cleveland Idol thoughts, winner picks, event pics, and story if you were there or participated. Good luck to the finalists!

Robin Swoboda, the emcee of Cleveland Idol Saturday, February 27th 2010. What can you say about Robin... She gets more gorgeous every year and she's the funniest woman in Cleveland. Kept the crowd and contestants laughing. She said I smelled good and started to sing "Cecilia" ... My favorite Cleveland personality ever.

Cleveland Named Most Miserable City?

Forbes.com named Cleveland its "Most Miserable City" in the country. Along with many other cities mentioned, Cleveland ranked number one most miserable city based on many factors such as high unemployment rate, taxes, commute, pollution, 'crummy' sports teams, Cleveland Weather and public official corruption.

While no city is perfect and we don't claim Cleveland to be, I hardly think we're the most miserable or miserable at all for that matter. Forbes.com also went on to mention our commute time was bad. Really? Cleveland has one of the best commutes among major metropolitan cities. Forbes also takes a ride on the way-back machine and calls us out on the famous burning of the Cuyahoga River which was in... 1969. It was nice of them however, to leave out the time when Cleveland didn't have cars or electricity.

Also mentioned was the housing crisis. Cleveland has its share of foreclosures as with any other city, but we've seen a 19% decline in the last year and we were just awarded $41 million from HUD for rehabilitation, demolition and foreclosure prevention.

Yes, some residents of Cleveland have moved to other cities or states over the last five years, but many have moved here in return. Our real estate team specializes in Ohio relocation and we've helped many call the Cleveland area home. We see and hear first hand the comments, opinions and reasons for those living here. Many come here for the first time and view the city with us. They say very positive things. A reporter on Fox 8 called Forbes.com asking them if they actually visited the city before naming us the most miserable. Forbes.com responded with "I'm not sure." -- Many residents who actually live here and see the city daily offer a different opinion. The word "miserable" does not define us.

Cleveland could have been named most conceited, fake, pretentious or pompous city in the country. Home Improvements, Some Sell, Some Don’t

If you’re planning to sell your home, you’ve probably already looked around and decided to make some changes. Before going about drastic large improvements, consult your Realtor. Investing time and money making upgrades thinking it will help your home sell for more, could actually harm you. Some of these harmful upgrades may include, adding a green house, swimming pool, unique landscaping including waterfalls, drastic color changes in or out of the home, even flooring options. There are many upgrades of course that will help your bottom dollar significantly. The following improvements offer some of the best estimated rates of return.

Kitchen remodeling – 150 percent – today’s kitchens are elegant, simple, functional and stand to be the most important room in the home.
Landscaping and lawn - 100 percent - Even a few hundred dollars invested in lush grass, flowers, and shrubs may increase your curb appeal and sale price significantly.
Fireplace – 100 percent – Fireplaces add warmth and appeal to the home. Upgrading an existing fireplace or installing a new one can bring value. There are so many options today with energy efficient gas models, you almost can’t go wrong.
Second bathroom – 90 percent – Even a small second half bath can add value and be the final “sold” factor. In today’s market, additional bathrooms are desired. Decorate bathrooms with warmth and care. Leaving out all signs of personal use is a must. A remodeled bath can add 60-80 percent. Master baths are desirable as well as double sinks and unique tile and vanity upgrades.
Deck – 70 percent – Outdoor living is in demand and can bring an added smile after walking through the home. Seeing a nice surprise when walking outside is always a good thing. Freshly painted or low maintenance decks are a plus. If adding a deck isn't in the budget, try a do-it-yourself stone or brick patio project.
Painting The Exterior – 50 percent - Probably the best idea for added curb appeal, while making the home look fresh and well maintained. Even painting front doors, shutters or porches can make a huge difference.
Finished basement – 40 percent – An already existing space can be made into a living area that will be of value to a buyer. Walk out basements will create even a higher return. Many finished basements are outdated. Upgrade a little and see a significant difference!
Heating system/Mechanicals – 40 percent – Although buyer’s opinions may vary with this upgrade, replacing old furnaces, A/C, H20 tanks, etc. can certainly increase value. Your return however, may not bring as much as you would like. It’s probably best to only replace if needed.
Windows/Doors – 35 percent – They certainly make the home look better and more modern, but they are almost considered a normal feature in today’s market. Energy is a huge factor to many home buyers. Knowing how to effectively market these upgrades can help bring even more awareness and attention to the offer amount!
